Understanding Your Crown’s Porosity

Learn how your hair absorbs and holds moisture so you can build routines that actually support your crown — not fight it.

The Three Porosity Types

Three calm, recognisable ways your crown can behave.

Porosity isn’t a grade or a verdict — it’s simply a description of how moisture moves through your strands. Read each one with an open mind; many crowns shift gently between two of these depending on season, styling, and care.

Low Porosity

Slow to soak, slow to release

Your cuticle lies flat and tightly closed, so moisture takes its time getting in — but once it's there, it stays.

Moisture behaviour
Water often beads on the surface before slowly absorbing. Products can feel like they're sitting on the strand instead of sinking in.
What usually helps
Lightweight water-based layers, a little warmth during conditioning, and regular gentle clarifying to keep the cuticle from getting blocked.
Common frustration
Heavy butters and rich oils can build up quickly, leaving the crown feeling coated rather than nourished.

Medium Porosity

Steady, balanced, forgiving

Your cuticle sits in a comfortable middle place — open enough to absorb moisture easily, closed enough to hold it.

Moisture behaviour
Moisture goes in at a reasonable pace and stays for a fair amount of time, so most balanced routines work well without much fuss.
What usually helps
Consistency and balance. A familiar wash rhythm, the right mix of moisture and protein, and gentle maintenance keep things flowing.
Common frustration
Sudden swings — too much protein one week, too little the next — can throw the balance off and make your hair feel reactive.

High Porosity

Fast to soak, fast to release

Your cuticle has more openings, so moisture rushes in quickly — and just as quickly leaves if it isn't sealed in.

Moisture behaviour
Hair drinks water in fast, then air-dries almost as fast. Without sealing, that hydration disappears before it can really nourish.
What usually helps
Sealing moisture with the right oils or butters, a thoughtful protein–moisture balance, and lower-tension styling to keep the cuticle smooth.
Common frustration
Frequent heat, harsh manipulation, and skipping the seal step can leave the crown feeling dry no matter how much you moisturize.

What Your Crown May Need

A gentle starting point — not a checklist.

These aren’t rules. They’re small things that often work for each porosity — pick the ones that feel right and let your hair tell you the rest.

Low Porosity

  • Lightweight, water-based layers
  • Gentle warmth during conditioning
  • Avoiding heavy buildup
  • A clarifying step on a regular rhythm

Medium Porosity

  • Consistency in your wash + moisturize rhythm
  • Balance between protein and hydration
  • Steady, simple maintenance
  • Light protective styling when you need a break

High Porosity

  • Sealing moisture after every refresh
  • Thoughtful protein-moisture balance
  • Lower manipulation and gentler styling
  • Cooler water rinses to close the cuticle

Common Signs You Might Recognise

Sound familiar?

These are the things crowns often say to themselves — and each one quietly hints at a porosity story.

“My products sit on top.”

Often points to low porosity — the cuticle is closed, so layers can struggle to absorb.

“My hair dries almost instantly.”

Often points to high porosity — moisture is leaving as fast as it arrives.

“My hair always feels dry, no matter what I use.”

Can show up for both low and high porosity, just for different reasons.

“Moisture disappears within a day or two.”

Often points to high porosity, especially when the seal step is missing.

“My routine feels reactive — great one week, off the next.”

Often points to medium porosity falling out of its usual balance.

“Water beads on the surface before soaking in.”

Classic low porosity behavior — your cuticle is doing exactly what it should.

Product & Routine Tips

Lightweight guidance — never strict rules.

Crowns are individuals. Use these as soft starting points and adjust as your hair shows you what it likes.

Low Porosity Routine Tips

  • Many low-porosity crowns respond well to a steam or warm-towel deep conditioner.
  • Lighter leave-ins often layer better than rich creams.
  • A clarifying wash every few weeks may help moisture absorb more easily.
  • Applying products on slightly damp (not soaking) hair often works well.

Medium Porosity Routine Tips

  • A consistent weekly rhythm often works well — small changes go a long way.
  • Most medium-porosity crowns respond well to a balanced wash, condition, moisturize cycle.
  • Light protein every few weeks may help maintain elasticity.
  • There's usually no need for extremes — gentle, steady care suits this porosity best.

High Porosity Routine Tips

  • Many high-porosity crowns respond well to the LOC or LCO method to lock moisture in.
  • Sealing oils and rich butters often work well as the last step in a refresh.
  • Cool water rinses may help the cuticle settle and hold moisture longer.
  • A protein-rich treatment now and then may help fill in cuticle gaps.
